Procrastinating

My cute little foster kittens are gone :( I was starting to get attached to them but my cat Willow has staked out our house as his, and his alone. We have a good balance of happy pets right now (1 cat, 2 dogs) and I'm just not ready to upset it.

Now about my title- procrastinating. I've been doing a lot of it lately. I've been reading like crazy but not doing much writing. I couldn't even think of anything special to write about today. I feel like I'm losing steam with writing, which I'm hoping is only temporary, but it's hard to stay dedicated to something that takes so much time and gives little in return.

Any thoughts on how to light a fire under me? Because I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling this way once in awhile!

  1. It's all right to have ebbs and flow in your writing habits. I went several months without writing anything. Keep reading. Go do something new and fun. Watch an inspiring movie. Just don't beat yourself up because you're not writing like a maniac.

    1. Good to know, because you sound incredibly productive by comparison. I guess the break has been necessary.

  2. Oh I went through this Rose. I think we all do at some point. If you're like me, then your writing muse will trickle back to you soon, just don't try to force it if you need a break. Reading is good and like Alex said, go out and do something fun. Energize yourself with new experiences and laugh. Laugh a lot, it helps. Sending you lots of positive vibes and a big internet HUG!

    1. Awesome advice, and thanks for the hug :) And you're right, I don't want to force something that has been feeling like doing a paper for school instead of something I choose to do.

  3. It's okay, Rose! And I might be repeating others, but I like to think of those "down" moments as learning periods... as long as I'm in the world, I feel like I'm progressing. Whether I'm just reading a novel, a self-help book, or plotting, etc. I think time can always be used for progression, whether you're "writing" or not! ;) <3 <3 <3

    1. You're right, it's not wasted time, and I have been reading and redoing my novel- at least in my mind if not on "paper"/computer.

  4. When it is time the words will flow effortlessly.

I agree with the above people. Relax, there are no rules.

    1. Relax- that's a good word. Something I have to remind myself to do.

  5. We all experience these moments at some stage or the other... so you're in good company! LOL.
You should try some flash fic challenges in between...

    1. That's a good idea. I had a pretty good experience doing flash fiction in the past.

  6. Everyone goes through those times. If you're not feeling the writing then the reader won't be feeling the reading. They'll be able to tell your heart and soul wasn't into it so step back and take a break. Rejuvenate yourself. Don't wallow, keep busy and when you're ready, get back to it. Good luck!

  9. Sometimes procrastination is actually a good thing if it keeps your passion going.

  10. reading is good and important for a writer, so don't beat yourself up too much. What I also find that helps is setting up a writing schedule, a time to write whether I'm feeling inpired or not.
