Writing book on Amazon

I found this link for a book on writing from another blog. It was on promotion for free and I've found a lot of great advice in it. Click on the title to link to Amazon. It's not free anymore but I think the price is only $3 anyway. Great deal for a very encouraging book on the writing industry.

How to be a writer in the E-age, and keep your E-sanity

And who doesn't need a morale boost in this industry?

On my last post I mentioned I've had a preference for male authors, but I do read all kinds of books by all kinds of authors. Maybe it was more a romance aversion, but some books I've read lately by women have been REALLY good. Probably my favorite recent one was Chosen by a Horse, a memoir by author Susan Richards. I would say it fell in between a James Herriot and Marley and Me type book. I laughed and I cried, and it takes a lot for me to feel that deeply about what I'm reading.

I'm reading four different books right now, one of which is from my "reading through the library" project. Why do I do this to myself, I don't know. What are you reading now?

  1. Thanks for the info on the free book about writing. I downloaded it.

Religion in books? Very broad topic. I've read many books about many different religions, so I guess I'm okay with it.

If you mean religion in fiction, that's a whole different matter.

    1. You're right, I should have specified what kind of books. The one from the library is fiction, but I read a book on Iraq that was non-fiction and found the explanation on Muslims very informative. Mainly I'm referring to fiction however.

  2. I haven't heard of that book. Could be because I don't have an e-reader. Yet.

Religion--I'm fine with it as long as it comes across as the character's personal thing and doesn't feel like the author is out to teach, preach, or win me over to his/her perspective. And I say this as someone whose faith is an integral part of who I am.

  3. I'll be downloading that book, too. Thanks for the recommendation. And thanks to Richard's comment and your response, now I know you're talking specifically about works of fiction. It depends. If the stuff about religion is simply a natural part of the book, or if I know in advance that religion is an important aspect of the book, I'm fine with it, but I'm completely turned off by a book that serves only to shove the author's religious viewpoint down my throat.

  4. I don't include religion in my books either, although I'm a very strong Christian. As for reading, I don't mind a light touch on the subject. Speculative fiction tends to come with odd religions anyway.

  5. Seems like the consensus on religion is mutual. Thanks for all your comments. It reaffirms my feelings to leave religion out of my WIP.

    1. I've been thinking of you while I read this. What I really like is how the authors emphasize staying true to yourself, something that you've already learned but I'm still working on. Plus it REALLY puts rejections in perspective.

    1. I think part of the problem is there are so many books I want to read that when one gets slow, I'll start another. Bad habit maybe.

  9. Thanks for the links! I need to get on this because it sounds like a great source of info. I like to read two books at a time though it takes me longer to get through, but it looks like I'll have one finished by the end of the week. Also my Dad sent me the book Marley and Me a while back but I haven't gotten around to opening it up...sounds like you really enjoyed it. One question...will it make me cry? (:

    1. You're welcome on the link- I've found it very informative and positive. On Marley and Me, you will cry, but it's an endearing and mostly funny story. (No one else in my family will read it because of the sad part, but I thought it was worth it)

  11. I've been working on going through my huge TBR list. I have a habit of reading many at once as well, but it slows me down too much, hehehe.
