Books, Books, and More Books

I'm just assuming that when you're in the company of writers, you're also in the company of readers.  So what kind of books do YOU read? and has your interests evolved and why?
When I was a kid, we maybe had 5 television channels on a black and white set, no cell phones, and even though my dad was a computer programmer, we had no computer at home.  So we read books.  In fact, if I got in trouble, I got my book taken away, and remember it going on top of the refrigerator.  I was one of those kids that was told to put the book down on summer days, and go outside and play already!  What I read ranged from the classics-  Little House on the Prairie to mystery (Nancy Drew) but then in high school I read Jane Eyre and Sherlock Holmes.  I developed a preference for female writers like Jane Austen.
Nowadays though, I've started to lean towards male writers.  I like their sparse journalistic writing like Hemingway, and in fact I've been reading books by journalists like Richard Engel.  I'm a CNN junkie, by the way.  I've been reading some best sellers to get a feel for what's trending, but I stay away from romance and science fiction.  I like realistic books I guess, although it's not to say I won't read them.  Any well written book is worth my time, I guess.
I'm currently reading 3 novels- I don't know why I do that!  What about you?

  1. I real multiple books at once also. I have had others tell me that's weird but it works for me.

Like you I did a lot of reading growing up. I don't know if it was because of or the cause of my shyness.

  3. Maybe it's not so unusual after all! I know I read one of those but I can't remember which. It was a long time ago when I was in high school and I vaguely recall the general story; it was depressing:(

  4. I like to read books that take me away from reality... sure, I'll read the Oprah book club books, things like the Kite Runner and stuff--but I don't really *enjoy* them because they're too real... I like fluff, stories that transport me and make "real" life more tolerable, LOL ;)

    1. I'm currently going through a very intense phase in books, so even though I haven't read it, Kite Runner is right up my alley. I have no idea why I'm so into the "real" stuff- being a nurse my life can be pretty sad and intense by itself. Maybe it's a "it could be soo much worse" thing.

  5. I have a habit of reading more than one book at a time as well. I love reading but I came to it late because I was such a slow reader as a child. Plus no one else in my family read much.

    1. I'm still a slow reader! What makes it even worse is my hubby can finish a book in a couple of days which took me weeks to read, and English isn't even his first language. I hate (love) him!

  8. I wish I could just read any book, but I can't. :( It's hard for me to read for pleasure nowadays cause college tells me what I have to read, but normally, I just adore classics. I don't know why. I have to read on that reading level, even though I writer YA fiction. Go figure! LOL.

    1. I remember that! When I was in nursing school I couldn't wait to read something other than textbooks. When my load wasn't too heavy I'd sneak something in anyway. The classics are what inspire me to write!
